Orthodontic Treatment

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. Dr. Varallo can spot problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while baby teeth are still present. Early treatment may be recommended to:

  • Guide jaw growth.
  • Correct harmful oral habits.
  • Improve airway function.
  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position to avoid impaction.
  • Avoid extraction of teeth.

Dr. Varallo uses the Damon System braces. The Damon System aligns teeth and enhances facial aesthetic usually without extractions.

You may experience some discomfort the first few days after being fitted with braces, and after adjustment, but it is only temporary. Some pain medications such as Tylenol and Advil will help ease any discomfort you feel.

How often you will need to visit our office will depend on your orthodontic treatment and needs. Most of our patients who wear braces are seen every 6-8 weeks for regular adjustment.

Typically, the first visit consists of a thorough examination that will help Dr. Varallo gain insight into your orthodontic needs. After evaluation, he will consult you about his findings, and any orthodontic treatment options you may need.

Life with Braces

Absolutely! However, we recommend using a mouth guard when participating in sports to protect your teeth and braces from possible injury.

Once your orthodontic treatment begins, Dr. Varallo will give you a list of foods that you should avoid to better care for your teeth and braces. Some of these foods include ice, hard candies, raw vegetables and stick foods.

We recommend that patients brush their teeth at least 4 times a day; after each meal and before you go to bed. We will show you how to floss your teeth with braces and provide you with a fluoride treatment solution. We also recommend that you continue to see your family dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
