Caring for your Palate Expander

A palate expander is an essential orthodontic appliance designed to widen the upper jaw,
creating more space for teeth and improving your bite. Proper care is crucial for comfort,
effectiveness, and oral health. Here are some important tips to keep your expander in top
shape:

Daily Cleaning

To keep your expander clean and free from food debris:

  • Brush your expander thoroughly with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at
    least twice a day.
  • Use a water flosser or something soft (like a q-tip) to flush out any trapped food particles.
  • Rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash to help prevent plaque buildup.
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods that can damage the expander or get lodged in it.

Turning the Key

If your expander requires manual adjustments:

  • Follow Dr. Varallo’s instructions on how often to turn the key.
  • Make sure you are in a well-lit area or use a phone flashlight to see clearly. Have the
patient lay down on a couch or bed and have them put their chin up as high as they can
    for easier turning.
  • Insert the key fully into the hole and push it back in the direction of the arrow.
  • Remove the key carefully to avoid reversing the turn.
  • Keep track of your turns to ensure proper expansion.

Managing Discomfort

Some mild discomfort or pressure is normal when turning the expander. To ease any soreness:

  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days as the patient is getting used to the expander.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
  • Anything cold can help with discomfort.
  • Contact our office if you experience severe pain or difficulty turning the key.

Speaking and Eating Adjustments

It may take a few days to adjust to speaking and eating with your expander. Here are some
helpful tips:

  • Practice reading aloud to get used to the feeling.
  • Take small bites and chew slowly to prevent food from getting stuck.
  • Avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods that could damage the appliance.
  • Once the patient gets used to the expander, they will resume eating and speaking
    normally.
