Choosing Between Metal and Clear Braces

Braces might be on your radar for your child, or maybe you’ve finally decided it’s time for your own smile. One of the first things that usually comes up is choosing between metal and clear.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s okay. The right choice depends on what works best for your preferences and lifestyle. Dr. Varallo at Varallo Orthodontics has offices in both Arlington and Burlington. He can walk you through what makes the most sense for your situation.

What’s the Difference Between Clear Braces and Metal?

Both options straighten teeth, but they do it in different ways, and those differences can impact daily life, comfort, and appearance.

Metal Braces

These are the traditional brackets and wires that have been used for decades. They’re reliable, durable, and often the best choice for more complex alignment or bite issues. Regular adjustments guide the teeth into place over time.

Clear Options

There are two main types:

Each has its strengths. The right choice comes down to priorities like appearance, comfort, lifestyle, and how involved the treatment needs to be.

Real-Life Considerations That Make a Difference

Here’s what actually makes a difference in your daily routine:

  • Visibility: Want something subtle? Clear aligners or ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal braces. That can be a big deal for teens or adults who want to avoid the “brace face” look.
  • Food: With metal or ceramic braces, some foods are off-limits (think gum, popcorn, chewy candy). Clear aligners come out when you eat, so you don’t need to give up your favorites, as long as you’re brushing afterward.
  • Comfort: Metal brackets can be rough on the inside of your mouth, especially early on. Aligners are smoother and usually more comfortable overall.
  • Maintenance: Aligners mean more responsibility. You’ll need to keep track of them, clean them, and wear them as directed. Metal braces stay on 24/7, but you’ll need to brush really well around the brackets.
  • Appointments: Metal braces require regular adjustments at our Varallo Orthodontics office. With aligners, you’ll usually just switch to the next tray in the series at home, with fewer visits.
  • Durability: Metal braces are tough. Ceramic ones can chip more easily, and aligners need to be handled with care so they don’t crack or warp.

No matter what, you’ll need to commit to the process, but knowing what that actually looks like can make the choice clearer.

What About Treatment Time?

This is one of those “it depends” situations, but here’s the general idea about how long you may need to wear your braces:

Metal Braces

These often work a little faster for more complex cases. Dr. Varallo can make small, precise changes that help guide your teeth efficiently.

Clear Aligners

They’re great for mild to moderate cases and can work just as fast as long as you wear them consistently (we’re talking 20–22 hours a day).

Ceramic Braces

Pretty similar in speed to metal, but not quite as strong, so they might take a little longer in some cases.

Cost Isn’t Always What You Think

It’s easy to assume that clear braces must be way more expensive, but that’s not always the case. Depending on your treatment plan, clear aligners or ceramic braces might be close in price to metal ones.

Things that affect cost:

  • Complexity of your case
  • Length of treatment
  • Insurance coverage
  • The option you choose

What matters more is getting a clear breakdown of what’s included and asking the right questions about payment plans. Most people are surprised to find out they actually can afford the option they thought was off the table.

One Thing Most People Overlook

Here’s something a lot of people don’t think about until they’re in it:

How’s your (or your child’s) brushing routine?

If brushing is already a struggle, you’ll want to seriously consider how that fits into your decision. Braces, especially metal and ceramic, require extra care to avoid plaque buildup and gum irritation. Aligners let you brush and floss like normal, but they also need to stay clean themselves. So it’s worth being honest about what kind of routine feels manageable.

How Do You Choose What’s Right?

Start with your priorities:

  • Want something low-maintenance?
  • Prefer something less visible?
  • Hoping to get through treatment faster?
  • Trying to stay within a certain budget?

You don’t need to have it all figured out before walking into the office. However, if you have a sense of what matters most to you, that can help guide the conversation and the treatment plan.
